Tuscany. Homeland of wine, invents the first D.O.C.

It was thanks to the Greeks (who introduced the grapevine in Italy in the eighth century B.C.), that the Etruscans, a hardworking and joyful people, appreciated the vitis vinifera, and its product, the wine!

Not only that, while the Greeks excluded women from banquets and the consumption of wine, the Etruscans instead loved to toast with their women, and did everything to increase the culture and trade of wine towards the West.

In Florence, in 1266, wine merchants formed the first corporation together with hosts, bakers and hoteliers, and in 1282 a red glass on a white background became the coat of arms of the Arte dei Vinattieri. It included the owners of the taverns and the wine merchants who sold the wine wholesale or in the wine bars.

From 1670 Cosimo III de ‘Medici began giving the kings of England, Austria, France, Holland the wines of Montalcino, Pomino, Maiano and others, helping to strengthen the prestige of Tuscan wine.

On 24 September 1716, again thanks to Cosimo, the first DOC “denomination of controlled origin” was created for wines such as Chianti, Pomino, Carmignano and Val d’Arno di Sopra, wines produced exclusively in the relative geographical areas. (*)

Nowadays DOC and DOCG are common terms in the language and knowledge of the world of wine, and Tuscany is always at the forefront with wines of the highest quality.

We at Zà Zà also produce and sell wine: Chianti Zà Zà DOCG and Organic Red Chianti Classico Gallo Nero DOCG, on our online shop www.trattoriazaza.it/negozio/, a shop that is always open, where we are waiting for you!
